Nadia Comaneci, (born November 12th of November, 1961 Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej (now OnestiGheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej [now Onesti Romania) Romanian gymnast who was the first gymnast to be awarded a perfect score of 10 in the Olympic event. Bela Karolyi, later Romanian Gymnastics Coach, came across Comaneci when she was just six years old. The year 1969 was the first time she took part in the Romanian Junior Championships where she placed 13th. She won in 1970. The first time she competed in an international event that was an preolympics junior event for countries in the Communist bloc, she was awarded three gold medals. And in 1973 and 1975 she was named the all-around Junior Champion. In 1975, she took home four golds and one silver medal in her debut senior international competition. Lyudmila Torishcheva was a five-time European champion. She was the winner of the American Cup in New York City in 1976 and became the first woman to perform a backward double salto as dismounting from the uneven bars that are parallel.
